A tour to discover Sovana, one of the most beautiful villages in the tuff area and the extraordinary Etruscan Necropolis which is located a few km away.
Suana, the name given to it by the Romans after their conquest of the territory of Vulci in 278 BC, derives from the Etruscan word suf which means "green land".
Today the village has less than 300 inhabitants but in the period of maximum splendor, it represented one of the most important centers of the Etruscan civilization. Sovana is also known for being the birthplace of Ildebrando (whose birthplace we will visit) who became Pope Gregory VII, the famous reforming pontiff who in 1075 faced the dispute for the supremacy of the Pope over the Emporer.
In the 4th Century, Sovana became Christian thanks to the work of the evangelist San Mamiliano (patron saint of Sovana), the saint linked to the legend of the treasure of Montecristo narrated in the famous novel by Alexander Dumas.
After visiting the town we will take a short trip to the slopes of the suggestive Monte Rosello, pierced by tombs, and finally on to the extraordinary Etruscan Necropolis which was discovered by the English Aisley in 1843, allowing the territory of Sovana to assume a prominent position in the world of archeology and culture.
We will visit the Ildebranda Tomb, the most famous and by far one of the most monumental temple tombs in all of Etruria, the Tomb of the Winged Demons dated to the second half of the 3rd Century BC. and discovered only recently, in the Fall of 2004. Finally, we will walk the Via Cava (Etruscan road carved into the tufaceous rock).
