Description

In the heart of the metalliferous hills in the municipality of Monterotondo Marittimo, the ruins of two medieval castles are hidden among the dense Mediterranean scrub which, thanks to studies and archaeological excavations, tell a story closely linked to the exploitation of the mineral resources of the territory and to the noble families who managed such economic policies: Cugnano and Rocchette Pannocchieschi.

The trek led by an expert archaeologist is about a 10km loop allowing you to reach the castle of Cugnano where, in addition to the remains of the housing structures, you can still see traces of metallurgical activities. Continue through the woods to the castle of Rocchette Pannocchieschi where the ruins of elegant houses overlook gigantic sinkholes.
