A few hour tour to discover the Spanish fortresses and to enjoy a breathtaking view of the coast and village of Porto Ercole.
From the 16th century, the Argentario promontory was under Spanish control. To defend this small part of his dominion, King Philip II of Spain ordered the construction of avant-garde fortresses near the town of Porto Ercole.
Our trekking will follow a beautiful path with panoramic views to the Spanish fortresses, incredible strongholds built sheer above the sea.
We will start from the Fort Aldobrandesca (commonly called the Spanish Fort) which circumscribes the inhabited city center, forming an important defensive system around Porto Ercole.
We will continue to Fort Filippo, designed by the architect Giovanni Camerini shortly after the mid-sixteenth century, located just outside of town and representing the most fortified and interesting construction of the defensive complex of the garrison state.
Finally, we will visit Fort Stella perched on a hill overlooking the sea, an imposing fortified structure with a star-shape used, above all, as a watchtower that communicated with the other towers, rendering the area impregnable.
While Fort Filippo hosts a private condominium not open to the public, Fort Stella can be visited and often hosts contemporary art exhibitions.
